Proposed Construction of the Swart River off-channel Dam and Associated Infrastructure in Sedgefield, Southern Cape
Knysna Municipality is proposing the construction of an off-channel dam and associated infrastructure in Sedgefield. The proposed water augmentation project entails the abstraction of 1.2 Mm3 per annum of water from the Hoëkraal River, to the north of Sedgefield. This water would be transferred to a 400 000 m3 off-channel storage dam, located on the Swartriver Farm, to the east of the river.
The proposed project is listed in terms of the National Environment Management Act (No. 107 of 1998) as requiring authorisation from the competent environmental authority, viz. the National Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism via the EIA process (GN No. R385 of 21 April 2006). Ninham Shand Consulting Services has been appointed by Knysna Municipality to assist them in complying with these legal requirements.
