Proposed Upgrading of Knysna Wastewater Treatment Works
The existing Knysna Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) is situated on the east bank of the Knysna Lagoon, at Vigilance Place, adjacent to the industrial area and east of George Rex Drive. Knysna is located in the Eden District in the Southern Cape.
The activated sludge plant is currently operating at approximately 90% of its capacity and the proposed extensions will allow the future needs for wastewater treatment in Knysna to be met. The sludge drying facilities on site are inadequate, which results in substandard sludge drying at times. Upgrading of some of the associated infrastrstruisbaaiure is required to ensure optimal functioning.
It is proposed to upgrade the current facilities to treat the effluent, to meet the new effluent standards set by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF), when discharged into the lagoon. Uncontaminated water will still be used for irrigation purposes.
Ninham Shand (Pty) Ltd (Ninham Shand) has been appointed by the Knysna Municipality to undertake the requisite Environmental Impact Assessment process for the proposed project. Ninham Shand will also be providing the engineering services for the proposed project.
