Proposed Coal-Fired Power Stations in the Waterberg, Limpopo
Eskom is investigating the option to construct two new 5 400 MW coal-fired power stations and associated infrastructure in the Waterberg, Limpopo Province. The likely associated infrastructure includes, inter alia, a wastewater treatment works, a potable water treatment works, a demineralisation plant, access roads and rail infrastructure, general and hazardous waste storage and handling facilities, dams for the storage of "clean" and "dirty" water, an ashing facility, a coal stockyard, a transmission High-Voltage (HV) yard and construction accommodation.
Eskom appointed a team lead by Ninham Shand Consulting Services to undertake the requisite Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process, in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (No. 107 of 1998). The EIA process commenced with initial public engagement and authority consultation in September 2008.
The Scoping Report has been finalized and is available at Lephalale Local Municipal Offices, Lephalale Public Library, Marapong Clinic, Agri Lephalale Offices and at Lephalale District Agricultural Union, Theunispan Kontant Winkel offices from 9 April 2009.
Current Project Phase
The EIA process is proceeding into the Impact Assessment Phase. All registered Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) will be notified of the next opportunity to comment when the Draft Environmental Impact Report is made available.
