Proposed Construction Of Dasdrif Poultry Farm, Moorreesburg

Eikenhof Poultry Farms (Pty) Ltd proposes to construct 24 free range poultry sheds on the farm Dasdrif (Farm 945), Moorreesburg). The size of sheds are to be approximately 850 m2 (85m X 10m) each, i.e. a total area of approximately 20 400 m2. The size of the adjacent camps are approximately 1700 m2 (85 x 20m) each, i.e. a total area of approximately 40 800 m2 . The total overall area of the poultry sheds is therefore approximately 61 200 m2.

The associated infrastructure comprises the following:

  • A reservoir with a volume of approximately 300 m3;
  • A Supervisor`s house;
  • An underground water pipeline of approximately 110 mm in diameter; and
  • Additional internal access gravel roads less than 4 m wide.

Basic maintenance activities, e.g. grading of the access road (Road 369) into Dasdrif Farm, which runs over a portion of the adjacent property, Farm 946, Moorreesburg, as well as basic renovations/ repairs, e.g. painting and repairs at the existing farm shed and labourers' cottages will also be undertaken as part of the proposed project. Although these components of the project will be considered they are not triggered by the EIA Regulations.

Eikenhof Poultry Farms (Pty) Ltd appointed Aurecon to undertake the requisite Basic Environmental Assessment process, in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (No. 107 of 1998).

 

Current Project Phase

The applicant indicated that they intend to apply for the development of all 28 poultry sheds. Subsequently the Final Basic Assessment Report (BAR) has been revised with the inclusion of the revised layout and assessment of the potential environmental impacts associated with the proposed 28 poultry sheds. All changes made to the Final BAR have been underlined.

The Revised Final BAR has been made available to all registered Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) for a further 40 day comment period. Copies of the report have been lodged in the Moorreesburg Public Library and on the Aurecon website (http://www.aurecongroup.com) from 15 June 2010. Registered I&APs have until the 26 July 2010 to submit their comments to Aurecon.

Once the comment period closes all comments received and issues raised (if any) will be included in the Comments and Response Report III, and where appropriate will be used to update the Revised Final BAR, which will be submitted to the decision-making authority, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (D:EA&DP) for their consideration and decision.  Copies of I&AP comments and responses to the comments received will be sent to those who submitted comment. All registered I&APs will be notified when the Revised Final BAR is submitted to D:EA&DP.

Once D:EA&DP has reviewed the Revised Final BAR and are satisfied that it contains sufficient information to make an informed decision, they will issue an Environmental Authorisation. Registered I&APs will be notified of D:EA&DPs decision.
