Proposed Upgrading of the Piketberg Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) and Associated Infrastrucutre, Piketberg

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PROCESS
(D: EA&DP REF NO: E12/2/3/2-F1/11-0667/09)
(D: EA&DP NEM:WA Ref No: E13/2/10/2-F1/11-2004/09)

The Bergrivier Municipality proposes to upgrade the existing Piketberg Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) in Piketberg, Western Cape. The WWTW is located on a portion of Groottefontein Farm 241, Piketberg, approximately 2km north east of the town of Piketberg, east of the N7.

The proposed upgrade would increase the capacity of the Piketberg WWTW from approximately 1 Mega Litre (Ml) per day to 4.150 Ml per day. The upgrade would be undertaken in three phases, including the construction of wastewater treatment infrastructure, the removal and disposal of sludge from the sludge ponds and maturation river on site, and construction of a new access road. The proposed upgrade is required as a matter of urgency, in order to accommodate the growing demands of urban development in Piketberg and to improve the quality of the final effluent.

Aurecon has been appointed by Water & Wastewater Engineering, on behalf of the Bergrivier Municipality, to undertake the requisite environmental authorisation and waste management licence application processes for the proposed project, in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (No. 107 of 1998) as amended and the EIA Regulations, 2006, as well as the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (Act 59 of 2008). One combined Scoping and EIA process will be undertaken for the application for environmental authorisation and waste management licence processes (i.e. one set of reporting and a combined public participation process).

Current Project Phase

The Draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report for the project has been compiled, which provides a detailed description of the proposed upgrade and assessment of the potential positive and negative environmental impacts (both socio-economic and biophysical) associated with the proposed project.  The Draft EIA Report also assesses alternatives that will result from the proposed upgrade.

The Draft EIA Report has been made available to the public for a 40 day comment period. Copies of the Draft EIA Report can be viewed at the Piketberg Public Library.

If you would like to register as an Interested and Affected for this EIA process or submit any comments on the proposed project and/or Draft EIA Report, please complete a Response Form electronically (see “Comment on this project online”- link on lefthand side) and return it to Aurecon by fax, post or email, by no later than 6 August 2010.
