SANBI Working for Wetlands Project

Aurecon South Africa (Pty) Ltd has been appointed by the South African National Botanical Institute (SANBI) to undertake the various project activities and associated reporting required for the various phases of the wetland rehabilitation planning cycle.  These include Phase 1 Reports, the Wetland Rehabilitation Plans as well as the Basic Assessment Reports required for each project area within all nine provinces.

The two main objectives of the Working for Wetlands project are wetland conservation and poverty reduction through job creation and skills development.  Using funding from the Extended Public Works Programme of government, Working for Wetlands' key objective is to support and enable the protection, rehabilitation and sustainable use of South Africa's wetlands through cooperative governance and partnerships.  Within this context, Working for Wetlands seeks to rehabilitate and restore wetlands to an acceptable level of functioning in order for them to become self-sustaining components of the hydrological system.

The planning process required to successfully rehabilitate wetlands within South Africa is based on a 24 month timeframe which begins in Phase 1 (wetland prioritisation) and ends in Phase 3 (implementation).  Wetlands have been prioritised in the draft Phase 1 reports, the information of which will form the basis for the Phase 2 site visits and associated reporting in the form of a Basic Assessment Report and a Wetland Rehabilitation plan for each project.

Should you wish to comment on the draft Phase 1 Reports, please submit comments to the responsible EAP for the particular Province.
